Periodontal disease, more commonly known as “gum disease” is a common oral infection that can cause:
- Tooth loss
- Gum recession
- Bleeding and tenderness
- Bad breath
- Bone shrinkage
- Heavy tartar buildup
If it’s been a long time since your last dental cleaning, you could have an active periodontal infection without even realizing it.
Scaling and Root Planing
A deep cleaning is designed to remove calcified bacteria deep below the soft tissues, which would otherwise cause your gums to detach from the teeth. Periodontal scaling establishes a clean environment that facilitates healing and halts bone loss.
In some cases, we’ll place small antibiotic microcapsules just under the gums at the site of advanced disease, to speed up the healing process.
